How does eharmony’s matching system stack up against Match?
It ultimately hinges on the amount of time you can spare and the effort you are prepared to invest.
eharmony necessitates a 20-minute Compatibility Quiz, with the duration possibly varying depending on your thoughtfulness and sincerity. It resembles a Rorschach test, prompting you to select from abstract shapes that evoke emotional responses. This could be a factor to ponder before downloading the app. Upon quiz completion, the app utilizes your answers to create a compatibility score with other users. You can then peruse a “Discover List” of potential matches, but a fee is required to proceed further.
On the other hand, Match is more straightforward. The initial questionnaire takes roughly five minutes, enabling you to quickly view available profiles. Similar to Tinder, you can “like” profiles and mutually match or skip them. The algorithm also delivers daily curated matches (Highlights) based on your preferences and in-app activity.
What about the user interface?
An unappealing app interface can discourage use, no matter how functional it is. Both established apps have updated to stay competitive with swiping platforms, yet Match provides a more visually appealing and user-friendly interface.
During my first experience with eharmony, I faced challenges during the onboarding process. Certain questions, such as gender preferences, seemed to permit only one choice, even though multiple options were available. Moreover, eharmony’s outdated hunter-green color scheme was unattractive. The biggest UI concern was being led to a feed of obscured photos with a persistent orange banner pushing for a subscription purchase, resulting in a cluttered and aggressive experience.
Conversely, Match showcases a warm purple-and-pink color scheme. It clearly differentiates between single-choice and multiple-choice options. The interface feels more spacious, and upgrade prompts are less obtrusive, providing a cleaner, more modern user experience.
What are the costs of these platforms, and what do their subscription plans include?
The main concern regarding eharmony is its pricing, as it is costly and strongly advocates for paid membership. While having a paid membership with Match may be necessary to discover a lasting connection, it is more affordable and better aligns with expectations.
Here are the costs and features:
eharmony
eharmony’s free version is quite limited, serving primarily as a preview of potential functionalities. To view unblurred photos and send unrestricted messages, a premium membership is required. Subscription plans include six, 12, or 24-month options, starting at $59.90 per month for a six-month commitment or approximately $25.90 per month for a two-year plan. Premium tiers (Light, Plus, and Unlimited) provide unlimited messaging, clear photos, distance searches, and profile views.
However, in June 2025, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) took legal action against eharmony for “misleading and deceptive conduct.” Users reported feeling trapped by hidden auto-renewals and being pursued by debt collectors for outstanding fees.
Match
Match is more open and less aggressive regarding pricing, allowing users to explore without constant upgrade reminders. Free members can communicate with mutual matches and rate up to 50 profiles daily in the Recommended Stack. Premium tiers begin at $44.99 for a one-month subscription and decrease with an annual commitment. Premium features encompass unlimited likes, rewinds, and profile ratings on the “Discover” section. Higher tiers provide Priority Likes and automatic Boosts.
Additional features include “Private Mode” (hiding your profile from everyone except selected contacts) and one-time “Boosts” to enhance your profile visibility in search results for 60 minutes.
Match’s premium subscription includes a three-day refund policy. If users are dissatisfied with the local dating options, they have successfully obtained refunds during this timeframe. In contrast, with eharmony, you are bound once you subscribe.
