Apple’s inaugural foldable iPhone, informally referred to as the iPhone Fold, is expected to debut in September. Recent disclosures indicate how it may stand apart from the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 series.

Although Apple is tardy to the foldable smartphone scene, its legacy with the iPod and iPhone demonstrates that speed isn’t everything. Trustworthy leakers have posted dummy cases for the iPhone Fold on X, providing clues on how this foldable will set itself apart from rivals.

iPhone Fold vs. Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8: Design variations

In the meantime, Samsung intends to introduce the Galaxy Z Fold Wide, which will feature dimensions akin to those of the iPhone Fold. Leaks from Android Headlines display potential designs for the Fold Wide, but the Galaxy Z Fold 8 will likely retain a design reminiscent of last year’s Z Fold 7.

Initial visuals of the Z Fold 8 series depict devices with sharper corners, akin to the Z Fold 7, while Apple appears to prefer more curved edges. Both devices are anticipated to be extremely thin, with an unfolded width below 5 mm, similar to the Z Fold 7.

Samsung and Apple foldables: Other significant distinctions

Apple is said to be situating the volume controls on the top edge of the iPhone Fold, with a power and Touch ID button on the right edge. The iPhone Fold will operate on iOS (probably iOS 27), while the Galaxy foldables will utilize the most recent Android version.

The iPhone Fold might feature only two rear cameras, while the Z Fold 8 is projected to have three. Leaks regarding the Z Fold Wide suggest it will also have two cameras, corresponding to the iPhone Fold.

The iPhone Fold may have an advantage over the Galaxy Z Fold 8 by being more pocket-friendly. Its design sits between flip-style and tablet-style foldables, resembling the Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold, which received varied reviews.

At present, information relies on leaks and speculation. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, a reliable source, recently indicated that the iPhone Fold is scheduled for a 2026 launch, while the new Galaxy Z Fold smartphones are rumored to be unveiled on July 22.
