If you were a YouTube viewer in the late 2000s, you probably came across the sketch comedy of The Lonely Island and BriTANick. The Lonely Island, composed of Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer, and Jorma Taccone, has since become iconic figures in Saturday Night Live, celebrated for their music videos such as “Lazy Sunday,” “I’m on a Boat,” and “Dick in a Box.”
Around that same period, inspired by The Lonely Island, another beloved sketch group emerged from NYU, formed by longtime friends Brian McElhaney and Nick Kocher, known as BriTANick. Their rapid-fire absurdist comedy led to the creation of iconic sketches including “Boys Night In,” “Academy Award Winning Movie Trailer,” and “Sexy Pool Party.”
Mashable’s Executive Producer Mark Stetson sat down with BriTANick and The Lonely Island’s Jorma Taccone to talk about their new film, Over Your Dead Body, which is a remake of Tommy Wirkola’s Norwegian dark comedy The Trip. McElhaney and Kocher penned the screenplay, with Taccone at the helm, resulting in a comedic retelling that closely mirrors the original but infuses their distinct take.
Samara Weaving and Jason Segel play Lisa and Dan, a married couple who have grown weary of each other. To their friends and family, it appears they’re gearing up for a romantic getaway at Dan’s father’s cabin, but in reality, Dan is scheming to kill his wife and stage it as a climbing accident, a scenario that true crime enthusiasts might label an “alpine divorce.”
Taccone and BriTANick reflected on their evolution from sketch comedians producing now-famous comedy videos with “$15 and some Mini DV tapes.” The Lonely Island borrowed a camera from Bill Hader’s then-wife, director Maggie Carey, to create “Lazy Sunday,” while BriTANick managed all production in-house. McElhaney remarked, “Today, anyone can do it. Back in the day, you had to know someone with a FireWire cord and a camera and understand how to export from Final Cut Pro. Only the techies had that knowledge.”
Taccone remarked, “It’s fantastic that the barriers to entry have been lowered so anyone can express their creativity. However, with the abundance of content, prices have dropped. You can achieve more for less funding. That’s why it’s beneficial to have the backing of IFC to create something meaningful.”
Over Your Dead Body is currently showing in theaters.
