As the election approached, OpenAI enacted a series of strategies to limit the dissemination of misinformation on its platform. These measures included prohibiting the use of ChatGPT to mimic political candidates or governmental bodies, misrepresent voting processes, or dissuade voter engagement. Furthermore, OpenAI applied digital watermarks to AI-generated images produced using [DALL-E](https://mashable.com/article/dall-e-3-new-image-editing) to assist users in recognizing AI-created content.
OpenAI also partnered with the National Association of Secretaries of State to guarantee the delivery of accurate information to users. ChatGPT guided voters to [CanIVote.org](http://CanIVote.org), a nonpartisan resource for voting information.
Per [a blog post](https://openai.com/index/how-openai-is-approaching-2024-worldwide-elections/) from OpenAI, during the month prior to the election, ChatGPT referred users to CanIVote.org more than one million times. The platform denied over 250,000 requests for deepfakes involving notable political figures including President-elect [Donald Trump](https://mashable.com/category/donald-trump), Vice President Kamala Harris, Vice President-elect JD Vance, and Governor Tim Walz. On and after election day, ChatGPT delivered two million responses urging users to consult reputable news outlets like the Associated Press and Reuters for election results.
Despite these initiatives, the Bipartisan Policy Center raised concerns after evaluating ChatGPT with various questions related to voting. The center underscored the necessity of caution when utilizing AI tools for information, particularly regarding topics that influence democracy.
“It is simple to mislead users when relying exclusively on unverified sources, like ChatGPT and other chatbots, for answers,” the Bipartisan Policy Center noted in its report. “The bot has limitations in prompt length and in its training data, often offering incomplete or inconsistent responses. We advise users to confirm ChatGPT’s answers with trustworthy sources, such as government sites or local election boards.”
This election represented the first occasion when voters could turn to ChatGPT for election-related guidance. However, according to the Bipartisan Policy Center, enhancements are still needed before the midterm elections in 2026.
