**Bluesky Affirms It Doesn’t Utilize User Data for Generative AI Model Training**
Bluesky, the social media platform that has attracted more than three million followers since the U.S. presidential election, has clearly indicated that it does not employ user data to train generative AI models. In a post shared on Friday, Bluesky mentioned, “we do not use any of your content to train generative AI, and have no intention of doing so.”
In a subsequent post, the company elaborated that while it incorporates AI for content moderation and to enhance its Discover algorithmic feed, these systems do not include generative AI models trained on user-created content. The platform shared that AI assists in filtering inappropriate content and enhancing the user experience through post suggestions, but reaffirmed that user data is not utilized for AI training purposes.
> “Bluesky employs AI internally to aid in content moderation, which enables us to assess posts and protect human moderators from inappropriate content. We also implement AI in the Discover algorithmic feed to present you with posts we believe you’d appreciate. None of these are Gen AI systems trained on user content,” the company stated in a post.
This announcement arrives amid significant modifications to X (formerly Twitter), including changes to its blocking functionality and updates to its privacy policy permitting its large language model (LLM), Grok, to train on user information. These alterations, combined with Elon Musk’s outspoken backing of President Trump, have led many users to abandon X, with an increasing number transitioning to Bluesky.
Bluesky’s user count has skyrocketed, now exceeding [17 million users](https://bcounter.nat.vg/), a notable rise from 9 million in September. Many users have become cautious of platforms such as X, Meta, and Google, which have faced criticism for leveraging personal data to train AI models without offering transparent opt-out options. Bluesky’s position on refraining from using user data for generative AI training has been positively received by users in search of a less exploitative and toxic alternative to X.
However, it’s important to note that Bluesky does not currently provide any generative AI capabilities, which simplifies the maintenance of this position. As demonstrated by X’s frequent policy shifts, changes may occur down the line. While Bluesky’s existing Terms of Service do not specifically address AI model training, a new provision could potentially be introduced in the future. For the time being, Bluesky users can feel confident that their data is not being used for generative AI model training.
