Everything You Should Understand Regarding the Show-Stopping Guest Appearances in *Wicked*

The eagerly awaited cinematic adaptation of *Wicked* is brimming with top talent, showcasing Ariana Grande, Cynthia Erivo, Jonathan Bailey, and Jeff Goldblum. However, the film elevates the experience by incorporating three prominent personalities from the original Broadway show, enchanting audiences with nostalgic appearances.

### Who Appears in *Wicked*?

Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth, who first brought to life the beloved roles of Elphaba and Glinda on Broadway, have brief yet impactful cameos in the film. Their appearances take place during the song “One Short Day,” as Elphaba (portrayed by Erivo) and Glinda (portrayed by Grande) enter the spectacular Emerald City for the very first time.

Within this sequence, the pair attends a performance of *Wizomania*, a musical featured in the movie that honors the Wonderful Wizard of Oz (played by Goldblum). Although *Wizomania* is just a small segment of “One Short Day” in the stage version, the film elaborates on it, introducing a subplot involving the Wise Ones of Oz. These Wise Ones are depicted as the creators of the Grimmerie, an enchanted book that can only be interpreted by those with magical powers—like the Wizard. In an appropriate twist, Menzel and Chenoweth take on the roles of the Wise Ones, adding a layer of nostalgia to their original performances.

### A Meaningful Tribute

During an early screening and Q&A, *Wicked*’s composer and lyricist Stephen Schwartz discussed the rationale behind expanding *Wizomania* and incorporating Menzel and Chenoweth into the narrative.

“With *Wizomania*, we seized the chance to explore the Wizard’s manipulation—how he disseminates a deceptive story to persuade the citizens of Oz about his so-called abilities,” Schwartz remarked. “We also aimed to give more context regarding the Grimmerie, as it is integral not just in this film but even more so in the sequel.”

Schwartz and director Jon M. Chu had long desired to feature Menzel and Chenoweth in the film but faced challenges in identifying suitable roles. Ideas varied from professors at Shiz University to maternal figures, but it was ultimately Chu who suggested the Wise Ones. This decision not only pays tribute to their roles in the original Broadway production but also connects their cameos to the narrative’s core.

The scene is sprinkled with charming references to their Broadway backgrounds. Chenoweth humorously evokes her Glinda persona by shushing Grande in a wonderfully recognizable manner, while Menzel performs her famed “Defying Gravity” riff, thrilling the audience.

### A Personal Moment

Schwartz himself has a brief role at the conclusion of “One Short Day,” declaring to Elphaba and Glinda, “The Wizard will see you now!” Reflecting on the experience of filming alongside Menzel, Chenoweth, Erivo, and Grande, Schwartz expressed, “We essentially just recorded the scene, but mostly we were emotional.”

With its blend of innovative storytelling and heartfelt nods to the original stage production, *Wicked* is set to deliver a magical experience for both longtime fans and newcomers alike.
