Paying tribute to the plethora of rodents in F.W. Murnau’s *Nosferatu*, Robert Eggers’ eagerly awaited remake is poised to showcase an even greater number of rats—potentially exceeding the notorious rodent scenes in *Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade*.
As per Nicholas Hoult, a star of the film, the production employed approximately 5,000 rats. While appearing on *The Graham Norton Show*, Hoult divulged insights regarding his character’s journey through a swarm of rats, with some even specifically trained for the film. But how does one procure thousands of rats?
“Who do you reach out to?” Norton humorously queried, imitating a phone conversation. “Do you happen to have 5,000? Absolutely, we do.”
“Thank goodness you contacted us! At long last!” Hoult responded playfully.
Seated alongside Sigourney Weaver, Lolly Adefope, and Jamie Oliver, Hoult further discussed the difficulties encountered by Bill Skarsgård, who plays Count Orlok in the film. Skarsgård had to withstand being sealed in a sarcophagus, fully outfitted in prosthetics, amidst a flurry of rats—and, to complicate things, maggots. As Hoult noted, this occurred more times than anyone could fathom.
Fans can delve into the haunting realm of *Nosferatu* when it premieres in theaters on December 25.
