Tumblr Introduces Communities Functionality for Group Areas

Tumblr is rolling out a fresh feature named “Communities,” inspired by Reddit’s subreddits and Facebook’s groups. These online spaces aim to assist users in connecting over shared passions.

“Communities are a new and straightforward method to engage with other Tumblr users who understand,” the platform revealed in a [blog post](https://staff.tumblr.com/post/769680688183164928/tumblr-theyre-here-communities-are-finally). “You can invite mutuals who have the same interests to a private Community or launch a public Community for your favorite things and watch as new friends join in. Similar to a clown car, Communities can accommodate (almost) an unlimited number of people.”

The feature enables users to form spaces for anything from D&D sessions to exchanging cat pictures, having gone through beta testing for some users but officially launching on Thursday, Dec. 12, across web, iOS, and Android.

If you’re excited to get started, you can begin by [browsing current Communities](https://www.tumblr.com/communities/browse/), including those focused on [aesthetic](https://www.tumblr.com/communities/browse/aesthetic), [writing](https://www.tumblr.com/communities/browse/writing), or [TV shows](https://www.tumblr.com/communities/browse/tv%20shows). Alternatively, you can [create your own Community](https://www.tumblr.com/communities/new) to unite individuals around your favorite subjects.

Tumblr’s decision to launch Communities isn’t entirely surprising. The platform has encountered difficulties in remaining relevant, especially after its contentious [2018 ban on adult content](https://mashable.com/article/tumblr-adult-content-ban). Mimicking effective features from other platforms has become a typical tactic in social media — consider [Instagram Reels imitating TikTok](https://mashable.com/article/instagram-tiktok-ban-copycat) or [Facebook Stories taking cues from Snapchat](https://mashable.com/article/facebook-stories-snapchat). Therefore, perhaps the real question is: when will TikTok unveil its own version of Communities?
