Apple is potentially broadening its smart home offerings by introducing a smart doorbell.
As per *Bloomberg*’s Mark Gurman, the technology powerhouse is allegedly working on a doorbell that features facial recognition capabilities. This device would connect wirelessly to a deadbolt lock, enabling it to unlock doors for inhabitants—effectively working like Face ID for your residence.
News about the smart doorbell comes on the heels of speculation regarding Apple’s intention to launch a smart home hub and security camera, positioning itself to rival Amazon’s Ring and Google’s Nest. Following the cessation of its car development initiative and experiencing a tepid response to the Apple Vision Pro, Gurman indicates that Apple is refocusing on smart home solutions that seamlessly connect with its current ecosystem.
Apple is perceived to be prioritizing its dedication to privacy as a significant selling point in the competitive smart home arena. This emphasis could enhance its products’ attractiveness to consumers wary of security, particularly in the wake of privacy issues linked to rivals such as Ring. Apple’s smart home devices are expected to store information in iCloud, which not only supports its privacy-centered philosophy but might also generate additional income through iCloud storage subscriptions.
Regarding the smart doorbell, Apple could utilize its existing HomeKit framework to ensure compatibility with third-party locking mechanisms or possibly partner with a particular smart lock producer.
While Apple is reportedly well into the creation of the smart doorbell, it’s improbable that it will launch before the smart home hub, anticipated not to arrive until 2026.
