The Internet of Things (IoT), the interconnected network of “smart devices” that fuels a significant portion of our digital existence, is getting closer to functioning within a cohesive ecosystem.
Google Home, Apple’s HomeKit, and Samsung’s SmartThings have recently adopted a new testing and compatibility certification for smart homes, as stated by the [Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA)](https://csa-iot.org/). This certification, referred to as Matter, seeks to facilitate the seamless connection of a wider array of smart devices to home networks. The CSA, a consortium of companies and technology experts, is committed to establishing universal open standards for smart gadgets and [connected technologies](https://www.ibm.com/think/topics/internet-of-things). However, Amazon’s Alexa-equipped smart home system has not yet become part of this movement.
### What Is Matter Certification?
Products that achieve Matter certification can avoid the need for individual testing and approval procedures for each major technology ecosystem—a lengthy obstacle encountered in the past. Launched by the CSA in 2022, the Matter standard was crafted to transform interoperability among smart devices, creating a foundation for universal connectivity. It utilizes several existing technologies, such as Thread, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Ethernet, to enable local device integration. Leading companies like Amazon, Apple, Google, Samsung, LG, and various smart home brands such as Lutron, iRobot, Signify (Philips Hue), and Ikea have signed up for the “Build with Matter” initiative to contribute to the development of this system.
### A Slow Start, but a Promising Future
In spite of early excitement, the deployment of Matter certification and recertification has been gradual. Although significant smart home providers initially voiced their support, none have completely moved away from their proprietary testing methods under the unified standard. According to the CSA, the most recent announcement marks progress toward simplifying and improving the certification process, aiming to promote universal compatibility among devices.
At this stage, the Matter badge signifies an important achievement in the quest for a more integrated and user-friendly smart home ecosystem. While Amazon’s lack of involvement is noteworthy, the engagement of other key players indicates a hopeful transition towards enhanced interoperability in the IoT realm.
