Severance Season 2, Episode 5: What Is Written in the Note Discovered by Dylan?

The tribute for Irving (John Turturro) in *Severance* Season 2, Episode 5, was memorable for two main reasons: the eerie fruit head and Dylan’s (Zach Cherry) unexpected find behind a poster.

But what exactly was written on the note he discovered, and what could it signify?

We’ve detailed everything below.

### What did the note say?

After Mark (Adam Scott) and Helly (Britt Lower) leave Dylan at the memorial, he finds a note concealed behind the “Hang in There” poster. Notably, the image on the poster mirrors Dylan holding the switches in *Severance* Season 1’s finale, and the phrase resonates with Irving’s last words to him in Woe’s Hollow at the end of Episode 4.

On one side of the note, there’s an illustration of a long, dark corridor—the same one that Irving’s outie obsessively paints. On the reverse side, a written message is present.

Here’s the complete transcription, which seems to outline directions:

> “From O&D, first turn right, all the way down the hall and turn right, turn right, turn left, down a long hall and turn left, turn left, turn right, right, left, left, right, right, left, right, left, left, right, right, left, left down long hall and turn right, then left, right, turn right one more time and all the way down a long hallway…”

But where do these instructions lead, and what prompted Irving to leave them?

### What does the note signify?

To grasp the note’s importance, we must revisit two previous moments in *Severance* Season 2: one from Episode 3 and another from the start of Episode 5.

In Episode 3, Irving makes a trip to the Optics & Design (O&D) department, where Burt (Christopher Walken) used to work. He encounters Burt’s former colleague, Felicia (Claudia Robinson), who spots a sketch of the dark corridor in Irving’s notebook.

“How do you know about the Exports Hall?” she inquires. “We send many shipments there. Used to go ourselves, but now they send someone.”

Irving then questions her about its location.

At the outset of Episode 5, we see a man pushing a cart. He greets Felicia and another woman—likely at O&D—who give him a tray containing what seem to be surgical or dental instruments. The man swipes a card to unlock a door that opens into a long, dark corridor—the same one depicted in Irving’s drawing. At the end of the corridor stands an elevator with a red down arrow. He enters, and the door shuts.

When we link these scenes, it becomes apparent that Irving’s note contains directions to the “Exports Hall.” His outie was fixated on it, and now his innie is, too.

### Where does the Exports Hall lead?

This isn’t the first appearance of that foreboding corridor. In *Severance* Season 1, Mark’s wife, Ms. Casey (Dichen Lachman), is directed down that hallway after losing her job. At that time, her then-boss Harmony Cobel (Patricia Arquette) referred to it as “the Testing Floor.”

In essence, Irving has unwittingly provided Dylan with the key to deciphering the mystery that Mark and Helly have been attempting to solve: Where is Ms. Casey?

*Severance* Season 2 is currently available for streaming on Apple TV+, with new episodes premiering weekly.
