A fresh player has stepped into the competition to obtain TikTok and ensure its continued operation in the United States.

As reported by [Reuters](https://www.reuters.com/technology/reddit-co-founder-alexis-ohanian-joins-frank-mccourts-bid-tiktok-2025-03-03/), venture capitalist and Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian has allied with entrepreneur Frank McCourt in his effort to buy TikTok’s operations in the U.S.

“He possesses a vast array of experience… regarding the trajectory of social media, and I believe he has a sharp insight into its future direction,” McCourt mentioned to Reuters.

Ohanian validated his participation in an [Instagram Stories post](https://www.instagram.com/stories/alexisohanian/3580230352968675804/?hl=en), where he posted a screenshot of the Reuters article along with the caption, “Ready to acquire TikTok US and activate change 🗽.”

McCourt highlighted the importance of Ohanian’s contribution to the initiative, stating to Reuters, “His contribution is mainly in providing validation but also in promoting what we’re doing. This project involves highly sophisticated technology at its core, and thus you’re engaging with a very targeted audience when it comes to demonstrating the credibility of that technology and its functionality, as well as its necessity.”

McCourt, founder of Project Liberty, had previously proposed $20 billion in cash to ByteDance in what the group refers to as “The People’s Bid for TikTok.” Also supporting this initiative is Canadian investor and *Shark Tank* personality Kevin O’Leary.

This bid arises as investors rush to obtain a share in TikTok ahead of a potential [U.S. ban](https://mashable.com/article/tiktok-ban-april-deadline-when-what-happens). The Supreme Court upheld then-President Joe Biden’s TikTok ban unanimously, but former President Donald Trump later extended the deadline. Presently, TikTok is still available on app stores; however, Trump’s extension will lapse on April 5. Although TikTok has expressed a desire not to sell, a sale remains the most feasible path to avert a ban in the U.S.
