Stephen King has a track record of making remarkably precise forecasts, as demonstrated in *The Dead Zone*, which many argue predicted the emergence of Donald Trump. Now, the iconic horror writer is leveraging another one of his novels to comment on the president’s latest actions.
King, who is currently more engaged on Threads than on X, recently invoked his 1987 work *Misery* to provide critique on the present state of the U.S. economy.
“Consider it like this,” King penned. “Paul Sheldon represents the American economy. Donald Trump is his top enthusiast.”
For those who may not know *Misery*, Paul Sheldon is a writer who, after surviving a car accident, is saved—and subsequently imprisoned—by Annie Wilkes, a mentally unstable nurse who professes to be his greatest admirer.
Through this metaphor, King suggests that Trump is not merely obsessed with the U.S. economy but is also, via his policies—such as tariffs—potentially holding it captive and inflicting considerable damage.
