Sony ULT Field 3 Hands-On Assessment: Testing Sony’s Newest Bass-Driven Speaker

Sony Enhances ULT Speaker Range with New Mid-Size and Compact Variants

One year following the debut of its ULT audio collection, Sony has unveiled three fresh models: the ULT Field 3, ULT Field 5, and ULT Tower 9. These new additions cater to the mid-size segment of the Field series while also offering a more compact alternative to the Tower speaker.

As someone who appreciates the initial ULT offerings — particularly the Sony ULT Wear headphones and the ultra-portable ULT Field 1 — I was thrilled to see the expansion of the lineup. The naming system is refreshingly simple compared to Sony’s usual product nomenclature, and these new models are designed to provide greater variety for various listening preferences.

Hands-On with the Sony ULT Field 3

I’ve been putting the ULT Field 3 through its paces for the last two weeks, and it has proven to be an excellent pick for bass aficionados and outdoor music fans. Retailing at $199 — the same price as its predecessor, the SRS-XE300 — the ULT Field 3 brings several enhancements without increasing the cost.

Key Features and Specs:

– 7-band EQ (improved from the 3-band EQ in the SRS-XE300)
– One woofer, two passive radiators, and one tweeter
– ULT mode for boosted bass
– IP67 rating: waterproof, dustproof, shockproof, and rustproof
– Party Connect: link with up to 100 compatible speakers
– Usable in both vertical and horizontal orientations
– USB-C device charging

Battery Life

Sony asserts that the ULT Field 3 can operate for up to 24 hours with ULT mode activated. At max volume, that estimate drops to roughly five hours. A quick 10-minute charge yields about two hours of playback at moderate volume.

During my testing, I used the speaker for roughly 10 hours at 50% volume with ULT Power engaged, and the battery drained to 60%, aligning with Sony’s claims.

Sound Performance: Powerful and Robust

The ULT Field 3 is not your typical shower speaker. It’s engineered for larger areas, outdoor environments, and individuals who enjoy loud music. Compared to the ULT Field 1, the Field 3 provides notably richer sound and greater volume.

While the sound may seem slightly tinny when you’re too close at high volumes, distancing yourself makes a significant difference. I compared it to the Bose SoundLink Max — which is priced at $200 more — and although Bose had the advantage in sound quality, the ULT Field 3 performed admirably, particularly given its price.

Voices were clear during podcast playback, and the speaker easily filled my 1,000-square-foot apartment with sound.

Bass Enthusiasts, Celebrate

The ULT Field 3 is highly bass-centric with ULT Power activated. If deep bass isn’t your thing, this speaker might not be suitable for you — although the bass boost can be deactivated. Still, if you’re seeking a more balanced sound profile, there are less expensive options available.

With bass-laden tracks like Bad Bunny’s “BAILE INoLVIDABLE,” the speaker created a party-like vibe, even when used solo. It also uncovered subtle bass nuances in songs like Taylor Swift’s “The Last Time (Taylor’s Version)” that I hadn’t previously noticed.

Portability and Durability

Despite its dimensions, the ULT Field 3 is remarkably lightweight and features a chic, detachable shoulder strap reminiscent of brands like Baggu or Off-White. With approximate measurements of 10 x 4.5 x 3 inches, it’s small enough to easily fit into a tote or backpack.

Its IP67 rating ensures it can withstand just about everything — water, dust, falls, and even rust. I tested it in the shower, and it worked flawlessly, with no drop in sound quality or functionality.

Sony Sound Connect App

Sony has integrated its audio devices within a single app: Sony Sound Connect. Through this app, you can customize the 7-band EQ, monitor battery lifespan, and connect several speakers using Party Connect.

However, I faced some connectivity challenges while attempting to pair the ULT Field 3 with the app and with my ULT Field 1. I hope this is merely a minor glitch to be fixed in future updates.

The app also features DJ Control capabilities, including sound effects (air horns, record scratches), which are entertaining but not essential—unless you’re an aspiring DJ.
