President Trump’s Tariffs Are Already Causing Tech Prices to Rise
President Donald Trump’s recent tariff measures have just started to impact the market, yet the effect on consumer tech prices is already evident. A hefty 145% tariff on imports from China—where a large share of global tech production occurs—combined with additional tariffs on other nations, has drastically increased the cost of importing electronics into the United States. Consequently, various tech companies are hiking prices on a range of products, including laptops, graphics cards, and televisions.
Here’s an overview of the confirmed price increases in the tech industry thus far:
Asus Laptops
The Taiwanese company Asus was quick to react to the impending tariff adjustments. In March, it raised the prices of several Zenbook and Vivobook models. Although these increases were fairly slight—between 5% and 10%—they indicated what was likely on the horizon. For instance, the Zenbook A14 rose from $1,099 to $1,199. Asus has indicated that more products might experience price raises as the tariff situation evolves, particularly with the newly implemented, elevated rates aimed at China.
Dame
The sexual wellness brand Dame chose a direct route by linking its price hikes to President Trump. In an Instagram update, the brand proclaimed a $5 “Trump Tariff Surcharge” on all items produced in China, referencing a 54% tariff that has heavily driven up their expenses. To emphasize this point, the company even included a visual of Trump’s distinctive hairstyle in its online shopping cart.
Framework Laptops
Framework, celebrated for its modular and easily repairable laptops, had initially reported a 10% price increase in reaction to the tariffs. However, following Trump’s announcement of a 90-day suspension on non-China tariffs, the company decided to retract the price increase. Nonetheless, Framework pointed out that certain components—such as bezels and expansion cards—are sourced from China and will still face rising costs.
Graphics Cards (GPUs)
Prices for graphics cards, vital for gaming and AI development, are anticipated to rise broadly. PCMag highlights that since most GPUs are produced in China, the 145% tariff is significantly affecting prices. Retailer Newegg has already increased prices on some Nvidia models by as much as $400. This will impact not only PC builders but also enterprises that depend on GPUs for AI and data processing.
Anker Products
The Chinese electronics brand Anker, recognized for its chargers and accessories, has elevated prices on 127 of its products available on Amazon. The average increase hovers around 18%. Given Anker’s reputation for quality and affordability, this represents a substantial setback for price-sensitive consumers.
Sony TVs
While Sony hasn’t explicitly confirmed that tariffs are the cause, pricing inconsistencies hint at this possibility. The Verge indicates that Sony’s newly released Bravia OLED TVs are priced about $500 higher in the U.S. compared to Canada, after currency adjustments. For instance, the 65-inch Bravia 8 II is listed at $3,999 in the U.S., while it is approximately $3,500 in Canada. This disparity strongly indicates that rising import expenses are being transferred to consumers.
Foreo
Swedish beauty tech brand Foreo, famed for its facial massagers and brushes, is reportedly planning to implement a price increase of 20% to 30% starting April 22. Although this has not been officially confirmed, multiple reports suggest that the hike is a result of tariff-induced cost pressures. Mashable has reached out to Foreo for comment.
Jolie
Jolie, the brand behind a popular filtered showerhead, is adding a “Trump Liberation Tariff” surcharge at checkout. According to The Information, Jolie is among the first direct-to-consumer brands to clearly label the tariff in its pricing. CEO Ryan Babenzien highlighted the importance of transparency in a LinkedIn post, declaring, “I am giving Trump full credit for his decision to add this Tariff to all US consumers.”
