TikTok Unveils Reviews Tab in Comments, Taking on Google Maps

TikTok is broadening its reach beyond mere entertainment and search, now entering the arena of user reviews.

The platform, already recognized as the preferred search tool for Gen Z, is experimenting with a new feature that incorporates reviews directly into the comments section of videos. As noted by TechCrunch, TikTok is starting to showcase reviews for particular locations—like restaurants and shops—within a newly introduced “Reviews” tab that appears next to video comments.

At present, if a TikTok video features a location you’re curious about, you would generally need to flip over to Google Maps or Yelp to gather further details such as its address, operational hours, and consumer feedback. This innovative feature aims to simplify that experience by keeping users engaged within the app.

The feature is still undergoing testing and is accessible to a select group of users. According to app researcher Jonah Manzano, who posted a screenshot on Threads, the review tab shows up only on certain videos that feature a tagged location.

It remains uncertain when or if TikTok will deploy this feature on a larger scale. While some users might welcome the extra convenience, others could perceive it as cluttering the comment section. Either way, this development signifies TikTok’s progression towards becoming an all-encompassing “super app.”
