Apple Introduces In-Store Device Recycling for Earth Day, Showcases Environmental Milestones

In preparation for Earth Day on April 22, Apple has announced remarkable advancements in its environmental initiatives, showcasing a 60 percent decrease in global greenhouse gas emissions since 2015. This announcement coincides with the launch of the company’s latest Environmental Progress Report, which outlines a variety of sustainability projects.

Among the noteworthy achievements, Apple indicates that it has diverted 600,000 metric tons of waste via its Zero Waste initiative. The company also highlighted a significant benchmark in its utilization of recycled materials, mentioning that over 99 percent of the rare earth elements used in its magnets and battery components are now sourced from recycled materials.

In 2024, Apple unveiled a new collection of carbon-neutral products, such as the Apple Watch Series 10 and the Mac mini, as part of its comprehensive commitment to sustainability.

Apple has established ambitious environmental objectives for the future, targeting a 75 percent reduction in its carbon emissions and aiming for complete carbon neutrality by 2030. The company also intends to fully transition to renewable energy by that time.

“We’re utilizing more clean energy and recycled materials than we ever have, conserving water, minimizing waste on a global scale, and making significant investments in nature,” stated Lisa Jackson, Apple’s Vice President of Environment, Policy, and Social Initiatives. “As we move closer to 2030, the challenge becomes greater—but we are responding with innovation, collaboration, and urgency.”

To commemorate Earth Day, Apple is providing customers with a 10 percent discount on select accessories when they recycle qualifying items in-store. Furthermore, Apple Watch and Fitness+ users can receive a special Earth Day award by completing a 30-minute workout. The Tips app will also highlight eco-friendly suggestions to assist users in making more sustainable selections.
