Much like the poignant conclusion of high school, Heartstopper is approaching its finale — but there’s one last chapter to unfold. Netflix has officially confirmed a feature film to conclude the cherished coming-of-age narrative.
Three years following the launch of Season 1, the streaming powerhouse disclosed through an Instagram announcement on Tuesday that Heartstopper will make a return with a film to say goodbye to Charlie Spring (Joe Locke), Nick Nelson (Kit Connor), and their tight-knit circle of friends. Filming is anticipated to commence later this year.
The forthcoming movie will draw inspiration from the soon-to-be-released sixth volume of Alice Oseman’s graphic novel series. As stated by Netflix, the plot will center on Nick and Charlie as they navigate a long-distance relationship, with Nick departing for university in a different city.
Wash Westmoreland, renowned for directing Still Alice, is set to helm the film. Series director Euros Lyn will take on the role of executive producer, alongside stars Locke and Connor, and creator Alice Oseman.
“I am absolutely thrilled that we get to share the conclusion of the Heartstopper tale,” Oseman expressed in a press release. “I’m incredibly thankful to everyone who has toiled to make this happen and to the amazing fans of Heartstopper for your enthusiasm and commitment. I am eager to bring this story to a wonderful ending.”
As fans may remember, Season 3 left the Paris Crew on the brink of adulthood, confronting the unknowns of life post-high school. Although the complete cast for the film hasn’t been verified, it’s difficult to envision a proper farewell without beloved characters like Tao (William Gao), Elle (Yasmin Finney), Isaac (Tobie Donovan), Tara (Corinna Brown), Darcy (Kizzy Edgell), Imogen (Rhea Norwood), and Tori (Jenny Walser).
With numerous emotional storylines yet to unravel, the Heartstopper movie promises to deliver a touching and appropriate finale for the series that has endeared itself to audiences worldwide.
