Writer and director Ryan Coogler collaborates once again with his longtime partner Michael B. Jordan in their newest endeavor, Sinners — a daring reinterpretation of the vampire genre that is captivating viewers. With thrilling musical sequences and a unique approach to vampires, the film has garnered enthusiastic reviews and impressive box office results. However, beyond its star-studded lineup — featuring Jordan, Hailee Steinfeld, and Jack O’Connell — Sinners offers a profound exploration of the relationship between art and corruption.
At the core of Sinners lies the narrative of Remmick (O’Connell), a vampire intent on enticing blues musician Sammie (Miles Caton) to join his coven. Agreeing to Remmick’s alluring proposal would grant Sammie fame — but at an exorbitant price: his soul.
Mashable Entertainment Editor Kristy Puchko recently engaged with Coogler and Jordan to delve into the film’s underlying themes. Jordan, who portrays twin brothers Smoke and Stack, shared insights about his own journey of preserving artistic authenticity, both as an actor and as a director, after his celebrated directorial debut with Creed III.
Coogler, on the other hand, found inspiration in the tale of Robert Johnson, the iconic blues artist rumored to have surrendered his soul to the devil in exchange for musical talent. He compares Sammie’s predicament to a “Faustian bargain,” stating, “When you’ve been dealt an unfavorable hand by society or fate, what are you prepared to relinquish to escape?”
“Vampirism,” Coogler remarked, “serves as a metaphor for an escape route — albeit one that requires a hefty sacrifice.”
And for those keen to discover how that sacrifice unfolds, be sure to linger until the end credits of Sinners for an unexpected twist.
Sinners is currently showing in theaters.
