X’s EU User Count Has Fallen Below Pre-Musk Figures
X, the social media site previously known as Twitter, currently has a smaller user base in the European Union than it did prior to Elon Musk’s purchase of the platform in 2022.
As per a recently published transparency report from X, the platform has 94.8 million monthly active users within the EU. This marks a decrease of around 11 million users in comparison to the last report — a notable decline emphasized by Social Media Today.
Mashable highlighted the platform’s dwindling European user numbers last autumn. In 2022, before Musk’s acquisition, X had over 100 million users in the area. The most recent statistics confirm that the downward trend has persisted into 2025.
Understanding X’s EU User Figures
According to the European Union’s Digital Services Act (DSA), major technology platforms such as X must submit regular transparency reports outlining their content moderation practices and user statistics. These reports disclose internal data that companies may otherwise choose to keep confidential — including counts of monthly active users.
X’s latest DSA report, issued this week, encompasses the timeframe from October 2024 to March 2025. It indicates a 10.5% decrease in EU users compared to the last report, which covered the period from April to September 2024.
The largest user losses were seen in France, where X’s monthly active users fell from 20.1 million to 17.4 million — a drop of 2.7 million users. Other significant declines include nearly 2 million less in Poland, 1.5 million in Germany, and over 1 million in Spain. Smaller nations like Luxembourg and Lithuania experienced even sharper proportional losses, with roughly 25% of users departing the platform.
An Ongoing Decline in Users
This is not the first indication of issues for X. Last month, Elon Musk’s AI venture, xAI, acquired the social media platform for a price close to what Musk originally invested in 2022. Despite attempts to project a favorable outlook, X has been grappling with falling revenue and a series of controversies since Musk took control.
There was a brief increase in traffic and advertiser engagement — including a resurgence of major brands like Apple — after Donald Trump’s election victory in November 2024. However, that increase was short-lived, and analysts have forecasted that X will keep losing users throughout 2025.
While X is obligated to reveal user data in the EU, third-party analytics show a similar trend elsewhere. A Financial Times report from September 2023 indicated that X had lost nearly 20% of its daily active users in the U.S. and about one-third in the U.K. since Musk’s acquisition.
These declines occur amid a broader backlash against Musk, including worldwide protests targeting Tesla, his electric vehicle business. Reports suggest Tesla’s profits have fallen by 71%, intensifying scrutiny of Musk’s management across his various enterprises.
