Every year, the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) showcases a plethora of new technological devices, with many remaining as simple prototypes or conceptual demos. Yet, occasionally, a product arrives that piques genuine consumer interest — and actually reaches the market. Introducing Bird Buddy’s newest creation: the Petal Smart Nature Camera.
After its introduction at CES 2025 in January, the $129 Petal camera — alongside its modular companion system, Wonder Blocks — initiated a Kickstarter campaign on April 29. The response was astounding. In merely 24 hours, the campaign garnered $1.5 million from over 5,000 backers, exceeding its $100,000 target by an incredible 1,400%. As of this moment, that figure has risen to over $1.8 million from 6,300 supporters.
So, what’s generating all the excitement?
From Bird Feeder to Backyard Observatory
Bird Buddy first gained attention in 2020 with its AI-driven smart bird feeder that utilizes an inbuilt camera to identify various bird species. It quickly formed a dedicated fan base of nature lovers. According to co-founder and CEO Franci Zidar, the Petal marks a logical progression — a means to broaden the Bird Buddy ecosystem to include plants, insects, and pollinators.
The Petal camera is crafted with both utility and aesthetics in mind. Encased in a cup-shaped design offered in several colors, it sports a flexible, bendable stem that can be wrapped around branches or attached to planters and poles. Its inviting, flower-like appearance stands in stark contrast to the stark look of conventional security cameras.
Boasting a 12MP sensor, the Petal comes with a detachable macro lens for close-up photography and an optional solar panel that enables it to function indefinitely in most settings. Without the panel, its energy-saving design permits over a month of operation on a single charge.
More Intelligent Than Your Average Camera
However, the Petal isn’t solely about attractive imagery. It operates using an AI system called Nature Intelligence, capable of recognizing over 2,000 species through visual and auditory signals. It also tracks environmental shifts and alerts users to significant activities — like a bird constructing its nest nearby.
The camera connects with a companion app that features a storytelling engine named Nature’s Voice, which assembles 4K video highlights into short nature documentaries. The narration even imitates the renowned voice of David Attenborough.
A notable feature is the Impact Score, which delivers insights into local biodiversity and monitors visits from pollinators. For those aiming to enhance their backyard’s ecological appeal, Bird Buddy has Wonder Blocks — a modular habitat system created to attract bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds.
Introducing Wonder Blocks
The Wonder Blocks system incorporates a Petal camera, an Observation Pole, and a self-watering planter base referred to as the Habitat. This base combines a Bee Habitat, Bee Observatory, and a small water feature dubbed the Stream. It also includes a seed pod customized for your area’s native flowers. Additional accessories — such as a butterfly shelter, hummingbird feeder, and magnetic trellis — can be included to personalize your setup.
Pricing and Availability
While Zidar initially indicated that the Petal would be priced under $100, early Kickstarter supporters have the opportunity to secure it for $129. A Duo Bundle, which includes two cameras and an Observation Pole, is offered for $249. Wonder Blocks packages are priced between $299 and $1,199, and the Habitat planter alone (excluding the camera) is set at $149.
Shipping for the Petal and Wonder Blocks is anticipated to commence in mid-2026 — a slight wait, but one that many nature enthusiasts appear willing to tolerate.
In the meantime, Bird Buddy’s original smart bird feeder is still available and currently on sale for $199 at Amazon and Target.
