After an extensive five-year hiatus, Fortnite has officially made its way back to the iOS App Store—a significant triumph for developer Epic Games in its lengthy legal dispute with Apple. While Epic revels in this success, enthusiasts of the widely-loved battle royale title should also recognize the contributions of various other tech giants that played a role in facilitating this return.
Just a few days prior, Fortnite found itself caught in the app store quagmire. Epic had put forth the game for review, but Apple declined to approve it without a legal order. That order arrived on Monday, May 19, when Judge Yvonne Gonzales Rogers issued a directive mandating Apple to either restore Fortnite or provide a legal rationale for its refusal. Within 24 hours, the game reappeared on iPhones, as reported by The New York Times.
This is the same judge who recently enacted a rare contempt order against Apple, alleging that the company intentionally breached her prior ruling in the case. Her latest ruling signifies yet another important legal win for Epic, which has been outspoken about the app’s status on social media, often taking digs at Apple in the process.
Epic did not undertake this struggle independently. Microsoft played an essential part by submitting an amicus brief supporting Epic’s case, according to The Verge. Microsoft has long sought to introduce an Xbox mobile store on iOS, but Apple’s limitations on directing users to alternative payment options have obstructed this goal.
Spotify also merits recognition. The music streaming titan allied with Microsoft, Meta, and X (formerly Twitter) in submitting a legal brief backing Epic last year. More recently, following a court mandate that compelled Apple to permit external payment links, Spotify became the first major app to adopt this change—allowing users to pay outside the application without restrictions.
The legal battles between Epic and Apple trace back to 2020 and continue to unfold. But for the time being, Fortnite enthusiasts in the U.S. can finally return to enjoying the game on their iPhones. While Epic may be the public face of the struggle, it’s evident they had formidable partners along their journey.
