Mashable Say More is a video podcast featuring extensive conversations with renowned actors, writers, directors, and more, hosted by Mashable personnel. This week, Entertainment Editor Kristy Puchko sat down with Danny and Michael Philippou, the sibling filmmakers behind the new A24 horror film Bring Her Back, at Mashable’s studio in New York City.
Sally Hawkins, a two-time Oscar nominee, plays foster mother Laura. She seems warm and friendly, but when nearly 18-year-old Andy (Billy Barratt) and his sister Piper (Sora Wong) relocate to Laura’s isolated house, Andy observes troubling behavior in his new guardian, particularly regarding another foster child, Oliver (Jonah Wren Phillips).
If the Philippou brothers’ first film Talk to Me was disquieting, Bring Her Back will leave you petrified. My review commended the film: “While I gasped and yelled during the Philippous’ newest, I also found myself holding my breath and weeping. Although they cautioned critics and audiences that their latest work is ‘bleak,’ I found it to be striking. Alongside a narrative of psychological distress, physical agony, and murder, Bring Her Back also conveys a tale of love transcending death, and how that can be a double-edged sword.”
Mashable talked with the brothers about their inspirations, their beginnings in online video production, the status of their proposed Street Fighter adaptation, and their upcoming projects, including Talk to Me 2.
