Elon Musk’s X is rolling out a revamped version of XChat featuring numerous privacy-centric attributes, including what Musk refers to as ‘Bitcoin style’ encryption.
If you’re not familiar with “XChat,” it’s simply the new moniker for the platform’s direct messaging functionality, now set to mirror WhatsApp or Signal more closely.
The transition to X’s DMs was expected back in April, as X temporarily halted encrypted DMs last week. Now it’s officially confirmed, with Musk detailing some features in a message on X.
Musk stated that the updated XChat will include “Bitcoin style” encryption and will be created using the Rust programming language with a “completely new architecture.” Alongside encryption, XChat will provide vanishing messages, the capability to send “any type” of file, and options for audio and video calls.
At present, direct messages on X only permit sharing of media files, while encrypted messages are restricted to subscribers and come with various limitations.
It’s unclear what Musk implies by “Bitcoin style” encryption. Bitcoin utilizes multiple encryption methods, including the Elliptical Curve Digital Signature Algorithm for public/private key generation and the Secure Hash Algorithm 256 (SHA-256) for transaction validation. Nonetheless, a messaging application would require a system for end-to-end encryption of messages among users, which Bitcoin does not offer.
In any case, XChat appears to be accessible to certain users as a beta feature. TechCrunch recently reported that it’s being deployed to beta testers, with some X subscribers having the ability to use it.
