Samsung Might Integrate Perplexity AI on Upcoming Galaxy Smartphones

Samsung users could soon enjoy features powered by Perplexity on their devices. According to Bloomberg, Samsung is nearing the completion of an agreement to incorporate Perplexity search functionalities into the forthcoming Galaxy S26 series. This may include pre-installing the Perplexity app on Samsung devices, integrating Perplexity search capabilities into Samsung’s web browser, and potentially linking Perplexity with Samsung’s Bixby virtual assistant.

Moreover, Samsung is said to be a major investor in Perplexity’s latest funding round, with the goal of raising $500 million at a valuation of $14 billion.

Samsung was an early adopter of AI technologies, with the Galaxy S24 series being promoted as the “first AI phone.” The Galaxy AI from the company has mainly utilized Google Gemini for features powered by AI, allowing interactions with both Samsung and third-party apps, executing tasks for users, and accessing Google Search through Gemini Live. A collaboration with Perplexity would broaden Samsung’s services and lessen its dependence on Google.

In a similar vein, Apple is investigating Perplexity for AI-driven search in Safari, as mentioned by Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior VP of services, during the Google antitrust trial. Apple had previously secured a $20 billion agreement with Google to establish their search engine as the default for Safari and has collaborated with OpenAI for its Apple Intelligence AI features. Apple seeks to partner with additional AI firms to provide users with a variety of AI models on their devices.

Google has historically dominated the search engine arena, yet the rise of AI-driven search engines from startups like Perplexity and the increasing user preference for chatbots like ChatGPT are posing challenges to Google’s dominance. Additionally, Google may be compelled to divest its Chrome browser following the antitrust ruling declaring it a monopoly.

It remains unclear if Samsung’s prospective partnership with Perplexity is a calculated response to this potential scenario. Nonetheless, Samsung’s investment in Perplexity suggests that serious competitors are poised to challenge Google, fueled by generative AI.
