Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale Trailer Showcases Emotional Homage to Dame Maggie Smith

The conclusion of *Downton Abbey* has finally arrived, with the Crawley family stepping into the late 1930s for their concluding story.

With a trailer unveiled today, Julian Fellowes’ *Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale* propels the beloved characters deeper into the decade, continuing from the early ’30s elegance presented in the second film. The film will depict locations from the ’30s, including London’s West End and Ascot Racecourse, while also returning the characters to the legendary mansion where it all started.

*The Grand Finale* will pay homage to the late Dame Maggie Smith, whose role as Violet Crawley, Dowager Countess of Grantham, was a pivotal aspect of the Downton experience. Violet’s character met her end at the conclusion of *Downton Abbey: A New Era*, released two years prior to Smith’s own passing in September 2024. In the trailer, a poignant scene features Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery) taking a moment to contemplate a portrait of her grandmother, Violet, in the mansion’s esteemed corridors.

It’s a challenge to bid farewell on so many levels.

*Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale* will be released in theaters on Sept. 12.
