Google Wallet to Eliminate Direct PayPal Connection This Month

In less than two weeks, Google Wallet users in the U.S. will no longer have the ability to directly connect their PayPal accounts. If you are utilizing PayPal for contactless payments on your Android device, you will need to seek an alternative solution.

As per an announcement on the Google Wallet support page, initially observed by Android Authority, Google’s digital wallet platform will discontinue PayPal integration. Effective June 13, “linked PayPal accounts will be automatically removed and no longer supported,” according to the page. Google started to phase out this integration by preventing new users from linking their PayPal accounts since April 13.

Google Wallet will continue to permit purchases via a PayPal debit card, but users can no longer directly connect their PayPal accounts. “Currently, customers wishing to use PayPal as a payment method in their Google and Samsung Wallets will need to add their PayPal Debit Mastercard,” a PayPal spokesperson stated. PayPal revealed this update last July, but Google is now executing these changes.

In February, executives unveiled a new plan to change PayPal from “a payments company to a commerce platform,” or “PayPal 2.0,” as reported by PYMNTS. This strategy involves expanding beyond online dealings and providing more avenues for merchants to engage with customers. This may include creating a rival to Google and Apple Wallet, enabling PayPal users to perform contactless mobile payments directly through PayPal.

Recently, PayPal declared an update to its Android and iOS applications in Germany to facilitate contactless payments, showcasing an initial instance of this new direction.
