A Trailer for House of Dynamite: Kathryn Bigelow’s Film on the Missile Crisis Seems Frightening

Are you prepared for a surge of anxiety today? Check out the trailer for Netflix’s “A House of Dynamite,” the forthcoming missile crisis drama directed by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Kathryn Bigelow (“The Hurt Locker,” “Zero Dark Thirty”).

Helmed by Bigelow and scripted by Noah Oppenheim (“Zero Day,” “Jackie”), “A House of Dynamite” explores the frantic reaction to reports of an unknown nuclear missile on its way to the US. With merely 18 minutes to prevent a devastating strike, the pressure escalates.

Oppenheim offers various perspectives on these 18 minutes, unfolding the events through the eyes of officers in the Situation Room (Rebecca Ferguson and Jason Clarke), security advisors (Gabriel Basso and Greta Lee), and the US President (Idris Elba), each tackling their responsibilities amid this impending crisis.

Just yesterday, “A House of Dynamite” debuted at the 2025 Venice International Film Festival, receiving acclaim for its intensity and effectiveness in stirring concerns about nuclear warfare. While I haven’t seen the film, the trailer alone is sufficient to ignite those anxieties.

Set eerily to Carl Sagan’s “Pale Blue Dot” address, the trailer for “A House of Dynamite” exemplifies the art of building tension. Observing the DEFCON level climb is disquieting, and combined with the foreboding tagline “not if, when,” it evokes a spine-chilling sensation.

View it yourself above, but prepare for the pall of nuclear war to loom over you like a dark cloud the entire day.

“A House of Dynamite” also stars Jared Harris, Tracy Letts, Anthony Ramos, Moses Ingram, Jonah Hauer-King, Malachi Beasley, Brian Tee, Gbenga Akinnagbe, Willa Fitzgerald, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Kyle Allen, and Kaitlyn Dever.

“A House of Dynamite” is set to hit select theaters on Oct. 3 in the UK and Oct. 10 worldwide. The film will premiere on Netflix on Oct. 24.
