Netflix’s limited series *Adolescence*, co-created by Stephen Graham and Jack Thorne, is creating waves not only for its **extraordinary technical achievement** but also for the insightful dialogues it provokes. The story kicks off with the arrest of a young boy charged with the murder of his classmate, but instead of pursuing a conventional *whodunnit* storyline, *Adolescence* explores the underlying question of *why* such incidents happen.
In a recent appearance on *The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon*, Graham shared that the creative team intentionally crafted the series to ignite meaningful discussions.
“As a group, we didn’t aspire to create a whodunnit—we aimed for it to be more about *why*,” Graham told Fallon. He mentioned that the concept for the show stemmed from real-life incidents he had come across in the media. “I read an article about a young boy who murdered a young girl. A few months later, there was another incident, in a totally different region of the country, where something similar occurred. Honestly, Jim, it shattered my heart.”
Graham contemplated the wider societal repercussions of these tragedies. “I began pondering—what sort of world are we inhabiting where young boys are attacking young girls? You know that saying, ‘It takes a village to raise a child’? Well, what if we’re all accountable? The education system, parenting, the community, the government—we all have a part to play,” he stated. “I’m not here to point fingers, but I genuinely believe we need to engage in a dialogue about it.”
*Adolescence* is currently available for streaming on Netflix.
