Adult creators Rebecca Shaw and Ben Kronengold respond to fan fiction regarding the show

FX’s *Adults* addresses a void in today’s television landscape, crafting a hangout sitcom reminiscent of *Living Single* and *Seinfeld* aimed at Gen Z.

Developed by Rebecca Shaw and Ben Kronengold, the show showcases many elements from its cherished sitcom predecessors, featuring a close-knit cast — played by the talented ensemble of Malik Elassal, Lucy Freyer, Owen Thiele, Amita Rao, and Jack Innanen — along with romance within the friend circle. However, its contemporary backdrop also enables it to delve into modern aspects of adulthood, particularly the influence of technology in the characters’ lives. From lamenting article paywalls to using AirTags to keep track of each other, the leads of *Adults* are deeply embedded in the online world, making it no surprise that the series has garnered a fanbase across the internet, ranging from character-centric fan edits to out-of-context compilation videos.

In this segment from Mashable’s complete *Say More* interview with Shaw and Kronengold, Entertainment Reporter Belen Edwards inquires about the show’s online feedback.

“It’s pretty astonishing to us, honestly,” Kronengold remarked. “I think in our wildest dreams, we hoped this generation, for whom we created the show, would connect with it, and the fact that they appear to have done so and there seems to be a resonance is truly all we could wish for.”

“We’re really touched by it,” Shaw replied. “I also find it surprising how creative the fans have been in return, not just tweeting about it or discussing the show, but also producing fan edits and fan fiction.”

Indeed, there is *Adults* fan fiction, and Shaw, Kronengold, and the cast have already perused some of it. Thiele and Innanen even acted out portions on TikTok (and yes, it’s Rated E for Explicit).
