AirPods Pro 3 versus Beats Powerbeats Pro 2: Which Wireless Earbuds Should You Purchase?

Anticipate improved ANC and audio from the AirPods Pro 3

Apple has enhanced noise cancellation in the AirPods Pro 3 in comparison to the previous model, and the improvement is evident. Most sounds across the frequency range are hardly perceptible, with only a few high-frequency noises (like sirens and whistles) being noticeable. Transparency Mode is outstanding, delivering a natural presence of ambient noise. Engaging the new Hearing Health modes transforms the earbuds into hearing aids. Conversation Mode boosts vocal clarity for effective communication. Adaptive Audio integrates both ANC modes, providing the best aspects of each with vibrant sound. Regarding audio quality, the sound performance on the AirPods Pro 3 is remarkable. Bass and clarity are amplified, and the adaptive EQ tailors the sound to your surroundings. Customized Spatial Audio is ideal for immersive listening, with an added enhancement for bass on Dolby Atmos content.

The Powerbeats Pro 2 possess their own audio advantages. Bass stays powerful and vibrant. The balance of frequencies is improved this time, resulting in a pleasing combination of lows, mids, and highs. Spatial Audio with headtracking operates better on the Powerbeats Pro 2 than on the Fit Pro. However, ANC is a notable setback, with persistent noise during both indoor and outdoor activities. Mid- and high-frequency sounds can sometimes be distracting. Thankfully, Transparency mode works well to boost situational awareness.

The sportier and more durable buds are the Powerbeats Pro 2

Although they have a modest IP rating (IPX4 sweat and water resistance), the Powerbeats Pro 2 are designed for vigorous workouts. Sturdy plastic encases the entire product, providing reassurance if the buds or case happen to drop on hard surfaces. Beats’ earhook design keeps the buds reliably in place. My only fitness-related issue is the inconsistent heart rate monitoring. With up to 10 hours of battery life per charge, you can enjoy longer workout sessions between recharges. The wireless charging case adds another 45 hours of use when charged fully. If the earbuds run low on power, USB-C charging can deliver 1.5 hours of use in just 5 minutes.

The AirPods Pro 3 were crafted with fitness in consideration. I utilized the AirPods Pro 3 for my workouts and found the heart rate monitor to be mostly reliable. The extended battery life (up to 8 hours with ANC active) is a bonus, although the decrease in extra charges from the case is disappointing (dropping from 30 hours to 24 hours). These earbuds also feature the same rapid charging time as the Powerbeats Pro 2. The longer sound port fits snugly in the concha, ensuring stability but causing slight discomfort after prolonged use. Apple’s silicone tips still secure a tight fit. With IP57 dust-, sweat-, and water-resistance, both the earbuds and the charging case are safeguarded. However, caution is required when handling the AirPods Pro 3 due to their delicate structure. A 0/10 repairability score from iFixit underscores the risk of damaging internal elements should repairs be attempted.

Key compromises

The AirPods Pro 3 provide the quintessential Apple experience, making them excellent for any iDevice (iPhone/iPad) or Mac user. However, Android users face restricted functionality. All previously mentioned listening modes are confined to Apple’s ecosystem. The same applies to essential features associated with the H2 processor: audio sharing, auto switch, and “Hey Siri,” among others. Apple does not support Google Assistant activation.
