Alex Garland, Joseph Quinn, and Charles Melton talk about the profound experience of shooting *Warfare*.

Renowned *Civil War* director Alex Garland is preparing to re-enter the fray with *Warfare*, an upcoming film he co-wrote and co-directed with Ray Mendoza. Slated for release in 2025, this endeavor signifies a partnership between Garland and Mendoza, an Iraq War veteran who served as Garland’s military advisor during *Civil War*.

The concept for *Warfare* was conceived during the making of *Civil War*, as Garland and Mendoza contemplated developing a film inspired by Mendoza’s actual experiences. The narrative centers on a squad of young Navy SEALs in Iraq undertaking an overwatch mission that rapidly evolves into a struggle for survival. “They encountered contact, and the film portrays their journey of uniting and devising a plan to reach safety,” Mendoza elaborates in a newly unveiled first look.

A standout aspect of the film is its real-time narrative technique. Garland underscores that this choice was made to portray the grim realities of combat, asserting, “Reality doesn’t provide anyone a pass.”

The first look also features commentary from the film’s cast, which includes D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai, Will Poulter, Charles Melton, Joseph Quinn, and Cosmo Jarvis. The actors reflect on their rigorous three-week SEAL boot camp training and the profoundly personal significance of the film, especially for Mendoza.

Woon-A-Tai takes on the role of Mendoza in the film, which pays homage to fellow veteran Elliot Miller (portrayed by Jarvis). Miller was involved in the actual operation depicted in the film but possesses no recollection of it. “It’s simply a love letter from Ray to Elliot,” Melton reveals.

*Warfare* is scheduled to premiere in theaters on April 11.
