Amazon Halts Blue Jay Warehouse Robot Initiative in Less Than a Year

In October, Amazon unveiled Blue Jay, a robotic arm system designed to function as “an additional set of hands” for warehouse personnel. This week, Amazon made the decision to terminate Blue Jay.

The information was first reported by Business Insider and subsequently validated by TechCrunch. Blue Jay was intended as a multi-arm aide for same-day delivery facilities and was undergoing trials in South Carolina at the point of its announcement. After a six-month period, Amazon is discontinuing the Blue Jay project, reallocating its technology and workforce to other endeavors.

An Amazon representative shared with TechCrunch that Blue Jay was always envisioned as a prototype. “We’re continually investigating new ways to enhance the customer experience and boost safety, efficiency, and engagement for our workers,” the representative remarked. “In this situation, we’re progressing the application of the technology created for Blue Jay, and almost all of it will keep on supporting our employees throughout the network.”

Blue Jay was not the sole warehouse robotics initiative from Amazon, and it will not be the last. Nevertheless, this specific endeavor did not unfold as anticipated.
