Insiders disclose that Apple is in discussions to integrate Google Gemini to improve its AI-driven iOS assistant. Bloomberg News initially reported that the expected Siri enhancement, likely aimed for a 2026 launch, may include a tailored LLM driven by Google’s Gemini chatbot. This signifies Apple’s continuous investigation into external partnerships.
Sources informed Bloomberg that Apple reached out to Alphabet Inc., the parent company of Google, regarding a personalized model, and Google has been evaluating a model compatible with Apple’s systems. In June, there were rumors suggesting that Apple could forgo its intentions to create an in-house LLM for an enhanced Siri, choosing instead to collaborate with OpenAI’s ChatGPT or Anthropic’s Claude. Internally, Apple has been weighing the advantages of a proprietary Siri AI, dubbed the “Linwood” project, against external solutions, labeled “Glenwood.”
At that time, Apple’s pursuit of externalizing Siri AI seemed like a setback amid the AI surge, as rivals lured away Apple’s leading AI experts. Nevertheless, recently, major technology firms have also opted to cut back on their AI expenditures, suggesting a possible conclusion to the AI “bubble.”
Neither Apple nor Google has verified the potential alliance, although both alluded to the possibility that a Gemini incorporation with Apple devices could be on the horizon, alongside their current Search partnership. This integration would resemble earlier agreements between Apple and ChatGPT.
