Apple Granted Green Light for Hypertension Alert Function

Apple unveiled its newest Watches – the Apple Watch Series 11, Apple Watch Ultra 3, and Apple Watch SE 3 – earlier this week, but one important feature came with an asterisk. The Hypertension Notification feature, which is found on the Apple Watch Series 11 and Apple Watch Ultra 3, uses an optical sensor along with machine learning to track signs of hypertension over time. If elevated blood pressure is identified, users receive a prompt to investigate further. The problem? Apple initially did not have FDA approval for the feature. Now, Apple has revealed that the Hypertension Notification has obtained FDA clearance. The wait was brief since the new watches aren’t on the market yet. Apple indicates that the feature will be available next week in over 150 countries and regions, including the U.S. The positive note is that the newest hardware is not required for these notifications; it is included with watchOS 26, and some previous Watch models are compatible. According to Apple, the Hypertension Notification feature can be accessed on Apple Watch Series 9 or newer, as well as Apple Watch Ultra 2 and newer.
