Apple Launches Self-Service Repair Initiative for iPads

A decade prior, such a thing would have seemed inconceivable. Today, it has become a reality. In a blog post released on Wednesday, Apple revealed that a selection of iPad models is now part of its self-repair initiative. This program, available through a specially designed and easy-to-navigate website, allows iPad users to order comprehensive repair guides, tools, and “genuine Apple parts” to fix problems with their devices. According to Apple, this initiative can be utilized to repair screens, batteries, charging ports, and cameras.

Apple has released a list of compatible iPad models: iPad Air (M2 or newer), iPad Pro (M4), iPad mini (A17 Pro), and iPad (A16). Regrettably, this suggests that individuals with older iPads may not be able to undertake home repairs. Apple seems to focus on newer devices within the self-repair shop, as evidenced by the inclusion of the newly released iPhone 16e in the program.

For many years, bringing a faulty iPad to an Apple Store for service was the norm. Nevertheless, the “Right to Repair” movement ultimately compelled companies like Apple to implement self-repair programs. Apple’s initiative launched in 2022 and has grown to encompass 65 products under the Apple brand.

Personally, I still lean towards relying on professionals rather than attempting repairs myself.
