Recall the individual who was saved from the sea last year after utilizing his Apple Watch to seek assistance? Apple has unveiled audio from that emergency call in a fresh advertisement highlighting the safety functions of the Apple Watch.
Rick Shearman was swimming along the Australian coast in July when a powerful current carried him nearly a mile away from the shore. Fortunately, he was equipped with an Apple Watch Ultra and activated its Emergency SOS feature to reach local emergency services (000 in Australia). The watch not only linked him to help but also provided continuous updates on his location, enabling a rescue helicopter to locate him swiftly in the expansive ocean.
The audio from the call is remarkably serene, with Shearman maintaining composure despite the dire circumstances—an approach that likely aided him in conserving energy and remaining afloat. Although visibly fatigued, he managed to steer clear of panic, which could have intensified his predicament.
What is even more remarkable is the clarity of the call. Even though Shearman was treading water and switching between speaking into and listening to his watch, the audio is clear enough to be understood without subtitles. While Apple may have improved the sound quality for the advertisement, it was evidently audible enough at the moment for emergency responders to find and rescue him.
