Apple is poised to upgrade the AirPods Max with noteworthy enhancements.
In a statement made on Friday, the company disclosed that its over-ear headphones will soon be compatible with both lossless audio and ultra-low latency audio via a software update scheduled for release in April.
This announcement has been a delightful surprise, especially for those users who had lost hope of ever enjoying lossless audio on the AirPods Max. Initially released in 2020 and subsequently receiving a minor [update in 2024](https://mashable.com/article/apple-airpods-max-have-usb-c-charging), the headphones have been without lossless audio support, despite Apple Music providing this feature since 2021. That is finally about to change.
Lossless audio offers enhanced sound quality but needs greater bandwidth, which is why this feature will only be accessible when the AirPods Max are connected via a wired connection. The headphones will facilitate lossless audio at a maximum of 24-bit, 48 kHz quality.
Furthermore, the addition of ultra-low latency audio will greatly assist musicians, enabling them to record and mix tracks with minimal delay while using the AirPods Max.
To take advantage of lossless audio, users must connect their AirPods Max to an iPhone, iPad, or Mac using a USB-C cable. This feature will be included in the upcoming iOS 18.4, iPadOS 18.4, and macOS Sequoia 15.4, all anticipated to launch in April.
