It’s nearly time for the iPhone launch, and we’re seeing the typical surge of speculation regarding the new devices, with multiple new reports surfacing each week.
The most recent speculation is one we find troubling, indicating a possible price hike across the forthcoming iPhone 17 series.
As per Jefferies analyst Edison Lee (citing MacRumors), all upcoming iPhone 17 versions — iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Air, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max — are expected to see a $50 price boost.
The justification for this adjustment, as detailed in the report, is to counterbalance the increasing costs of components and U.S. tariffs on imports from China. The report further notes that additional cost pressures from India (where Apple is now producing a considerable number of its iPhones), as well as industry tariffs, have not yet been factored in.
We first heard about the iPhone 17 potentially costing more than its predecessor back in May. At that point, the Wall Street Journal indicated that Apple was “considering price hikes,” while also observing that the company was probably not going to publicly link any increases in price to tariffs.
Apple’s iPhone 16 begins at $799, and the iPhone 16 Pro starts at $999. If the aforementioned report holds true, the iPhone 17 could initiate at $849, with the iPhone 17 Pro starting at $1,049, while the iPhone 17 Air (assuming it exists) is an entirely new model, making its pricing more challenging to estimate; we’ve previously heard it might start at approximately $899.
