This week, Apple unveiled an updated 14-inch MacBook Pro powered by the new M5 chip. Similar to the earlier M4 version, it has a starting price of $1,599 and comes equipped with a 10-core CPU, 10-core GPU, 16GB of RAM, and 512GB of storage. Most specifications have been retained from the M4, but we’ll delve into that shortly.
The M5 MacBook Pro is now up for preorder at Amazon, Best Buy, and the Apple Store prior to its official launch on Wednesday, Oct. 22.
The latest MacBook Pro boasts “3.5x the AI performance and up to 1.6x faster graphics than the previous generation,” thanks to the M5 chip, as stated by Apple in a press release. Its CPU is also enhanced, although the company did not disclose how much faster it is.
The M5 MacBook Pro can be customized with up to 4TB of storage, an upgrade from the 1TB limit in the M4 version.
And that’s all for the updates. The M5 MacBook Pro closely resembles its forerunner: It has the same 14.2-inch Liquid Retina XDR display (with a possible nano-texture option), a 12MP Center Stage camera, a six-speaker audio system, consistent port arrangement, and a 24-hour battery life estimate. It is offered in the same space black and silver hues.
In support of the M5 model, the MacBook Pro series hasn’t seen a significant redesign since 2021, when Apple eliminated the Touch Bar, brought back MagSafe charging, and swapped its 13-inch model for a 14-inch variant. The upcoming M6 model is anticipated to be more thrilling — rumored to include an OLED display — but that’s still a year down the line.
The M5 chip has not yet made its way to the 16-inch MacBook Pro. That larger version continues to utilize the M4 Pro and M4 Max chips.
