AT&T has launched a new capability to safeguard its users against SIM swapping. The telecommunications firm, which recently reached a substantial settlement due to data breaches, revealed the Wireless Account Lock feature. Accessible in the myAT&T app for postpaid clients, it can be activated with a simple toggle switch. Once activated, the following operations are prohibited until the feature is deactivated:
– Modify SIM card/eSIM
– Upgrade device
– Add a new line
– Update billing information
– Alter phone numbers
– Transfer phones
– Change authorized users
The sole method to carry out these actions after enabling Wireless Account Lock is by physically accessing the phone with the app and deactivating it. This feature is designed to thwart SIM swapping, a scam where criminals obtain your phone number to access accounts that use two-factor authentication. AT&T users are encouraged to enable this feature for enhanced security.
