AWS Outage: Is Canvas Impacted?

On Monday, a disruption in service at Amazon Web Services (AWS), Amazon’s cloud computing and data solution, affected various platforms including Verizon, Venmo, and United Airlines. While most problems were fixed by Monday afternoon, the Learning Management System (LMS) Canvas continued to face challenges.

Since the morning of October 20, Canvas has been providing the same update: “We are continuing to work with Amazon Web Services looking into our Canvas, Mastery Connect and other Instructure products being down.”

Utilized by students, educators, professors, and administrators, Canvas is a software tool that offers remote access to syllabi, assignments, and grading. The outages for Canvas were extensive on Monday, impacting educational institutions such as California State University, Fullerton, and Indiana University Bloomington.

Canvas, a prominent ed-tech platform, is owned by Instructure Holdings, Inc., based in Salt Lake City.
