Black Celebrities Dominated the Spotlight at the 2025 Met Gala — and the Internet Wasn’t Able to Get Enough

The 2025 Met Gala illuminated New York City on Monday evening, as stars and fashion aficionados once again flocked to the Metropolitan Museum of Art for a night filled with high fashion and striking statements. As expected, social media buzzed with commentary regarding the evening’s most unforgettable attire.

This year’s theme, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” aligns with the Met’s upcoming spring exhibition, debuting on May 10. The display delves into the transformation of Black fashion from the 18th century to today, focusing specifically on Black dandyism and the significance of style in shaping Black identity throughout the Atlantic diaspora. In harmony with the theme, the official dress code was “Tailored to You,” celebrating the craftsmanship behind suiting and menswear.

Leading the pack were Black celebrities, who showcased exceptional looks that reflected the theme with grace, inventiveness, and cultural pride.

One of the most discussed attendees was Motown legend Diana Ross, who marked her return to the Met Gala after more than twenty years. She wowed in a flowing white gown with an impressive 18-foot train adorned with her family members’ names. The bespoke creation was a partnership between Ross, her son Evan, and Nigerian designer Ugo Mozie. Social media users were quick to label her look as iconic.

Actor Damson Idris also caught attention with a dramatic outfit transformation. He arrived in a white racing suit, later removing it to reveal a striking red suit from Tommy Hilfiger. Fashion commentator Derek Guy, known online as @dieworkwear, lauded Idris’ look, calling it a highlight of the evening.

Janelle Monáe offered yet another memorable moment. Collaborating with designer Thom Browne and costume designer Paul Tazewell, Monáe first took the stage in a pinstriped cape that featured the image of a suit. She then transitioned to a bold red, black, and white tailored outfit, complete with a bowler hat, monocle, and a brooch crafted from a tequila diamond — a poignant reference to the environmental and social ramifications of diamond mining in Africa.

The red carpet buzzed with unforgettable fashion statements. Tessa Thompson, Jodie Turner-Smith, Doechii, and Lupita Nyong’o shone in looks that honored the theme while displaying their unique styles. Lauryn Hill, Halle Berry, Kerry Washington, and Imaan Hammam also delivered remarkable ensembles that delighted fans.

This year, the male attendees of the Met Gala really made an impression. While some opted for traditional suits, many embraced the theme with flair and creativity. Brian Tyree Henry, Jeremy O. Harris, Khaby Lame, André 3000, Keith Powers, Alton Mason, and several others brought innovation and character to the carpet, receiving accolades from both fans and fashion critics.

Other stars showcased inventive interpretations of the “Tailored to You” theme. Sabrina Carpenter donned a Louis Vuitton bodysuit she described as a dramatic take on a dandy tailcoat. SEVENTEEN’s S.Coups sported a BOSS outfit inspired by the Korean hanbok, while Indian artist Diljit Dosanjh celebrated his Punjabi heritage in a custom sherwani by Prabal Gurung. Jenna Ortega embodied the tailoring concept with a Balmain gown crafted from metal rulers, designed by Olivier Rousteing.

From beginning to end, the 2025 Met Gala was a tribute to fashion, identity, and cultural expression. With so many remarkable looks, choosing a favorite is nearly impossible — but one thing is certain: this year’s attendees aced the assignment.
