After U.S. presidential elections, it’s typical to witness an uptick in searches related to leaving the country, as followers of the defeated side ponder their future actions. Although physically relocating can be a daunting task, transitioning between social media platforms presents a far simpler option. In light of the recent U.S. election outcomes, it seems that countless users are abandoning Elon Musk’s service, X (formerly Twitter), in favor of Bluesky.
As reported by [Bsky Stats](https://bsky.jazco.dev/stats), which monitors Bluesky’s user engagement and expansion, the platform has surpassed 14.6 million users. Jaz, a user of Bluesky and the operator of the stats site, disclosed that Bluesky has been attracting more than 100,000 new users each day since the U.S. presidential election held on November 5th.
> “Over 100k new users daily since November 5th and no indication of slowing down.
> ~10M follows daily (+400%)
> ~18M likes daily (+46%)
> ~3M posts daily (+30%)
> Firehose traffic consistently over 500 events per second for most of the day now.”

Bluesky has confirmed to news organizations such as [The Guardian](https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2024/nov/12/us-election-bluesky-users-flee-x-twitter-trump-musk) and [The Verge](https://www.theverge.com/2024/11/11/24293920/bluesky-700000-new-users-week-x-threads) that it has experienced over 700,000 new registrations in just the past week.
### Bluesky’s Swift Expansion
Bluesky has swiftly positioned itself as the primary alternative for users departing from Musk’s X. While Meta’s Threads remains the leading contender among X substitutes with [275 million users](https://mashable.com/article/threads-275-million-users), a significant portion of that success stems from its connection with Instagram. Conversely, Bluesky has flourished independently without substantial support from a major tech corporation. It now stands as the third most popular microblogging site, following X and Threads.
Bluesky’s expansion seems closely linked to Musk’s actions regarding X. For example, in September, millions of users from Brazil [shifted](https://mashable.com/article/bluesky-9-million-users-brazil-ban-x) to Bluesky after the Brazilian Supreme Court prohibited X due to Musk’s unwillingness to adhere to local regulations. Although X was ultimately reinstated after a fine was paid, Bluesky experienced a 50% growth in its user base during this situation.
Similarly, just last month, Bluesky witnessed [another influx](https://mashable.com/article/bluesky-half-a-million-new-users-after-x-twitter-block-change) of new users following X’s announcement of modifications to its blocking feature. Within 24 hours of this announcement, Bluesky added over 500,000 new members.
According to [social media analyst Axel Bruns](https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2024/nov/12/us-election-bluesky-users-flee-x-twitter-trump-musk), the platform’s growth is fueled by users in search of a space devoid of “far-right activism, misinformation, hate speech, bots, and all the rest.” He emphasized that a significant number of liberal users from X have transitioned “en masse” to Bluesky.
Elon Musk, a prominent supporter and financial contributor to Donald Trump’s campaign, is anticipated to have a considerable influence in Trump’s administration. Although Bluesky’s recent influx of users is smaller in comparison to previous spikes—like the ban in Brazil or changes to X’s blocking function—the platform may continue to expand as Musk’s impact on U.S. politics escalates.
