Bluesky Faces Downtime During Widespread Departure from Elon Musk’s X (previously Twitter)

Bluesky seemed to suffer a crash on Thursday after a spike in new users, with numerous individuals appearing to move from Elon Musk’s X (previously known as Twitter).

Per the platform’s [status page](https://status.bsky.app/), multiple systems were down at about 5:15 p.m. ET. Simultaneously, [Down Detector](https://downdetector.com/status/bluesky/) noted a significant rise in reported issues.

The full scope of the outage is still uncertain, but I found the app non-functional on both desktop and mobile. When I tried to access the site or app, I encountered a spinning circle, suggesting it was attempting to load. Earlier in the day, Down Detector also indicated a considerable spike in reports of problems.

It’s somewhat foreseeable that Bluesky could encounter technical challenges. Following Elon Musk’s outspoken backing of President-elect Donald Trump, a number of users started to shift to Bluesky. The platform [quickly ascended to the top of Apple’s App Store](https://mashable.com/article/bluesky-top-ios-app-apple-app-store), attracting roughly 100,000 new users each day since last week’s election.

Considering this swift surge in traffic, it’s not surprising that Bluesky might be experiencing some growing pains.
