Canvas Classroom Platform Set to Acquire Additional AI Functionalities from OpenAI

Numerous educational institutions utilizing the Canvas ed-tech platform for assignments, grading, and lesson planning are set to receive new AI capabilities shortly. Instructure, the parent company of Canvas, has teamed up with OpenAI to improve AI functionalities on the platform as part of broader industry partnerships.

Educators will gain from AI-driven personalization, feedback, and assessment analytics, streamlining repetitive tasks and offering customized learning paths for students. Canvas’s inaugural AI feature, the “LLM-Enabled Assignment,” empowers teachers to develop classroom chatbot interactions, tailor student engagements, and leverage LLM insights for submission evaluations. This tool is designed to instruct students on the responsible and effective application of AI within an educational context.

Claude, the chatbot from Anthropic, was integrated with Canvas in June, enabling students to utilize it during their coursework. This integration will persist alongside the collaboration with OpenAI. Leading AI companies are pouring resources into educational technologies, covering teacher resources, student skill enhancement, and a nationwide training initiative for educators in partnership with the American Federation of Teachers (AFT).

Instructure’s CEO, Steve Daly, remarked, “This partnership with OpenAI highlights our ambitious vision: establishing a future-ready ecosystem that promotes meaningful learning and achievement at every educational level. This marks a substantial advancement for the education sector as we persistently enhance the learning experience and elevate student results.”
