AI assistants from organizations such as OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic are evolving swiftly. New models, agentic functionalities, and innovative tools emerge weekly, boosting the potential of AI chatbots. ChatGPT, Gemini, and Grok rank among the most notable and recognized.
But is one of them better than the others? If you were to select one for investment, which would be your choice? Do you prefer ChatGPT or Grok? I have used all three AI tools extensively. Here’s a breakdown of their characteristics and what sets one apart.
Fundamentals: How do their features stack up?
ChatGPT, Gemini, and Grok bring distinct features, pricing, and advantages.
ChatGPT
The complimentary version of ChatGPT allows access to the GPT-4.1 mini and limited availability of OpenAI’s GPT-4o and GPT-o4-mini reasoning model. Users can take advantage of the deep research functionality, voice mode, file uploads for analysis, and develop custom GPTs. Free users may also produce images within certain limits.
The Plus subscription ($20/month) permits higher upload limits and access to models like GPT-4o, advanced reasoning models such as o3, the capability to create “Projects,” and restricted access to the Sora video generator and ChatGPT agent feature.
The Pro subscription ($200/month) delivers unlimited access to all OpenAI models, extended Sora access, and early feature access.
Editor’s note: OpenAI’s GPT-5 model is anticipated to debut in August, likely enhancing ChatGPT’s attractiveness.
Gemini
The free tier of Gemini grants access to Gemini 2.5 Flash and limited access to 2.5 Pro, image creation using Google’s Imagen 4 model, Deep Research, Gemini Live (voice mode), Gems (custom GPTs), Whisk, and NotebookLM.
The Google AI Pro plan presents increased limits for all features, including 2.5 Pro, Deep Search in AI Mode, limited access to Veo 3 through Flow, and Gemini integration in Docs and Gmail.
The Google AI Ultra plan boosts usage limits, gives complete access to the Veo 3 video generation model, and access to Project Mariner, Google’s AI agent for web browsing.
Grok
The free version of Grok includes access to Grok 3 and X’s Aurora Image generation model. Free users can utilize the Grok AI chatbot for research, writing, and various tasks, and might access Grok’s anime-style avatars through the Grok iOS and Android applications.
The “SuperGrok” plan ($30/month) provides <a href="https://mashable.com/article/grok-4-launched" target="_blank" data-ga-click="1" data-ga-label="$text" data-ga-item="
