OpenAI disclosed this week the level of daily engagement with its AI chatbot, ChatGPT. If you assumed 1 billion prompts were submitted each day, you would be quite mistaken. The actual figure stands at 2.5 billion, according to an Axios article. This total comprises at least 330 million prompts from users in the U.S. Axios further outlined OpenAI CEO Sam Altman’s initiatives in Washington, D.C., where he aims to advocate for the AI sector.
As for user statistics, OpenAI has indicated 500 million active weekly users since April, as reported by Forbes. SEMRush places ChatGPT as the fifth-most-visited site worldwide, with 4.6 billion visits occurring in May 2025. Backlinko reports that ChatGPT attracted 100 million users within its initial three months and commands 62.5% of the AI tools market share, alongside roughly 10 million paid subscribers.
The majority of ChatGPT users utilize the free version, which is expected. Since its debut, ChatGPT has emerged as a vital resource, frequently substituting Google for information retrieval. Nevertheless, The Economist highlights that “AI is killing the web,” while The Wall Street Journal warns of an “AI Armageddon,” where chatbots are affecting Google’s conventional search and publisher traffic.
Disclosure: Ziff Davis, the parent company of Mashable, initiated a lawsuit against OpenAI in April, claiming copyright infringement in the training and functioning of its AI systems.
