Controversial Dating Safety Applications Tea and TeaOnHer Taken Down from Apple App Store

Apple has confirmed to TechCrunch that it has pulled the contentious women’s safety app Tea and its counterpart for men, TeaOnHer, from the App Store across all regions. The removal was initially reported by the app insights platform Appfigures, as per TechCrunch.

Tea aimed to assist women in maintaining safety while dating. It functioned as an online whisper network where women could report unfavorable experiences with men, akin to the controversial “Are we dating the same guy?” groups on Facebook. In July, Tea became the subject of a significant cyberattack, leading to the exposure of sensitive information such as drivers’ licenses. Later, it was revealed that personal chats and phone numbers stored on Tea were compromised as well. TechCrunch also discovered that TeaOnHer faced security vulnerabilities.

Apple informed TechCrunch that Tea (officially known as Tea Dating Advice) and TeaOnHer did not comply with the company’s content moderation and user privacy standards, specifically addressing App Review Guidelines Rules 1.2 (which requires apps with user-generated content to provide blocking and removal functionalities) and 5.1.2 (prohibiting apps from using or sharing personal information without consent). Apple also referred TechCrunch to section 5.6, a part titled “Developer Code of Conduct.”

Section 5.6 states:

Please show respect to all individuals, whether in your replies to App Store reviews, customer support inquiries, or when interacting with Apple, including your responses in App Store Connect. Avoid any form of harassment, discriminatory behavior, intimidation, or bullying, and do not prompt others to partake in any of these actions. Continuous deceptive or misleading actions or other fraudulent behaviors may result in your expulsion from the Apple Developer Program.

In addition to all this, Apple mentioned a high volume of complaints and unfavorable reviews. Apple reportedly communicated these concerns to the developers of the dating apps, but they remain unresolved. As of publication, Tea and TeaOnHer still exist on the Android app store.
