If the internet loves anything, it’s adorable animals. Yet, in the era of AI, you can’t always rely on the animal videos you find online.
A recently trending video featured bunnies bouncing on a trampoline, allegedly filmed by a home security camera. It’s delightful but completely fabricated, produced by artificial intelligence.
This AI-generated video was first shared on TikTok by @rachelthecatlovers with the caption: “Just checked the home security cam and… I think we’ve got guest performers out back! @Ring.”
This clip has garnered 203 million views on TikTok. The tech site 404Media was the first to disclose its AI origins. As mentioned, one bunny disappears mid-jump, and the video’s background remains static.
Nevertheless, the AI video cleverly camouflages itself. It imitates night-time surveillance footage, hiding AI artifacts and low resolution. It appears lifelike and includes sounds like distant insects and creaking springs. It even tags Ring to give the impression it was recorded by an actual camera. Yet, it’s a fabrication, deceiving many viewers.
Since the launch of Google Veo 3, crafting convincing AI videos with sound has become simpler.
Individuals are astonished they were misled by AI, something they believed only happened to others. “This is the first AI that has ever fooled me,” remarked one comment. “How is this not real?” questioned another. “A few years ago, I was laughing at my mother for believing in AI,” one more added.
While the bunny video may be the most believable, it isn’t the only AI-generated animal clip to go viral. There’s a trend of fake videos depicting people removing barnacles from whales.
Or think about the collection of phony doorbell camera footage featuring animals. Imitation surveillance videos of animals seem to be a fresh genre of AI content.
So, if you come across incredible animal footage, perhaps it’s best not to take it at face value.
